Frustrated With eBay

Why does eBay go out of their way to piss off their users?  This is what happens when you’re huge and there are no competitors. You end up pissing off customers and not putting enough energy into trying to delight them.  Why bother trying to make users happy when you don’t have to?  Afterall, they’re already paying customers, and they’ve got nowhere else to go.

Reminds me of Microsoft in the 90′s. Why fix IE when there are no real alternatives?  That attitude led to Firefox, which of course led to massive UI and security fixes implemented in IE7 and now IE8 in an effort to stop shedding marketshare.

Until there’s a Firefox to eBay’s IE, all we can do is rant publicly. Here’s my story to add to the cacophony of “eBay sucks” rants.

90% of the time, selling on eBay is fine.  Things work as expected, and I don’t want to tear out my hair selling on the site.

The remaining 10% of the time, though, when there is a glitch, it’s incredibly frustrating.  Not because of the glitch itself — stuff happens, I understand — but it’s the lack of recourse that’s incredibly frustrating.

I got one of eBay’s inexplicable error messages today, followed up by the classic “add insult to injury” way I feel like eBay likes to treat its users.

Situation:

I want to edit a listing to add shipping options.  Simple.  I do this everyday.

Problem #1:

When I go to submit my changes, I get this error:

Please provide the correct information in the highlighted fields.
Please enter a valid value.

But there are no highlighted fields!

Here’s the screenshot of the error message.  If someone can point out which “highlighted field” has a bogus value, please tell me!

Just to make sure it wasn’t my changes that were triggering the error, I clicked to revise the item, but did not make any changes, and then hit submit.  Same error with a totally unrevised listing.  Um, ok. WTF?

Got the same error on both IE8 and Firefox 3.

Problem #2 (compounding the frustration):

There’s a nice little “live help” link in the upper right hand corner of the listing editing form.  Great!  In theory.  When I click on it though, the chat box is stuck “loading”. I waited about 2 minutes, then retried.  Same thing.

By this time, my blood pressure had reached a boiling point.  I was going to punch my monitor if I didn’t rant somewhere, so here I am. I wanted to make a 30 second change to one listing.  When that didn’t work as expected, and not being able to reach customer service to get help for my inexplicable error, I came to vent here instead.

Resolution:

Other than end the listing and create a new one?  None I’m aware of.

I suppose trying again tomorrow, and hoping the glitch has been fixed, is one way to go.

i just googled “ebay piece of ***” and “frustrated with ebay” and came accross your blog. I completely share your frustration. everything on ebay is twice as difficult as it should be. I had to enter my address, and email address about 15 times today. I had to enter my username and password about every time i clicked on a link. Then to set up an ebay seller's account they asked who else has an ebay account at my address – what the ****? I have no idea who has or may have another ebay account at my address. so now 20 minutes waiting for the ebay live chat help

I too am getting totally frustrated with eBay. I won an item but as soon as I paid for it things went south. I started getting this messages from the seller they would send me a new invoice (more money) but never received it. I kept trying to work things out but could tell the seller was just stalling. I tried to tell eBay BUT their policy is NOT to do anything for 30 days. Saying, the item is probably on it's way. How can it when they want more money. Finally after 30 days I open a case and what does eBay do, send me an automated message to contact the seller and TRY TO WORK IT OUT! #### read the damn case story. Ebay is just working the numbers like any other big business. Make money and give crappy service and hope they go away. I have yet been contacted by a human, only auto email and auto phone calls.

I had the same problem as the original poster, the only difference is that I DID get in touch with a customer service representative from ebay. Guess what? After over twenty minutes of trying to resolve the problem the guy says “I can see you have a good ebay rating, good luck selling your items” then signs off. I waited 45 minutes to get on the chat, and then while in the middle of him giving me unhelpful suggestions he just leaves me stranded. Would love to find an alternative of ebay to easily sell my products.

EBAY IS FUCKING RIDICULOUS !!!! i have been a seller since 2004, now i opened a new account to sell diferent items and to my awful surprise my account is limited to 80 listing per month, so i wait the 3 months and gather up feedback and still have limits, so i try contacting them, now here's where i start to get pissed OFF !! Being a european seller, my best solution is to get in touch with them via e-mail, BUT I DARE ANY OF YOU TO FIND THEIR F#CKING E-MAIL on the EBAY SITE !!!! Live chat? “Get back 5am to 10pm”, when i do so, ” CALL US” you gotta be f”cking kidding me, so i google for ebay's current customer e-mail and voila i get my response after TWO WEEKS !!!!! I'm not going any further with this, i'll skip a putrid trip of ebay's shennaningans and jump to this fact: member for 6 months, consistent positive feedback received,STILL 80 LISTING LIMITS EVERY MONTH! F#CK YOU EBAY, I CAN'T WAIT FOR COMPETITORS!!!!

I also spent about 45 minutes trying to resolve that valid value thing.  Finally made the phone call and got a PIN, “to speed things up”.  Unfortunately instead of pressing 1 for English, I went straight to the ever popular, someone who is learning English, compounded by the sound of kids, pots and pans, yelling and other annoying sounds. Unable to resolve

Wow it’s nice to hear I’m not the only one.  PLEASE someone soon make an alternative to EBAY. They treat their sellers like shit and the buys get to F%*& you around and nothing happens to them at all.
Also as a buyer I once brought a Caravan off ebay and the pictures they showed were of the van 10 years earlier before they gutted it. I had a towing company go pick it up and only saw it was totally different to the pictures they posted after I got it. I call the guy and spent lots of money taking him to court and ebay did nothing. He still up there sell.
My sister found I was selling something she really wanted and I told her it was already listed so she would have to bid on it properly, I then got shut down for shill bidding.  ARRRHHH
